Summative Evaluation

The effectiveness of my research:
Looking back on my research, I can see that my project, in concept, is relatively similar to what I researched. However, due to me wanting to come up with a new idea for my music video rather than use one I had personally already seen, it is a bit distant from my research in terms of the way it flows. For example, the videos I researched had a consistent flow in terms of the speed and the variation of cuts and clips. Whereas my video had a variety of cut speeds and at a point, the way clips are being cut doesn't match the beat of the song at all, although, I purposely did this to signify how out of sync the character in the video is with himself in terms of his mental health struggles and his relationship with his surroundings/environment. I also used a lot more clip speed variation which is quite different from my case studies, however, this was due to the song choice. Looking back I can see that I didn't make many deviations from my initial research because my idea didn't really change at all during the time from the start to the end of the project. My target audience has not changed at all throughout my project. Because of this, my target audience is similar, if not the same as most music videos of this genre.

Looking at a song with similar themes (all the kids are depressed - Jeremy Zucker), I can see how different the two music videos are to each other. For example, my music video uses a single character and their actions are showcased to show how they deal with mental health problems. Differently, in the music video for 'all the kids are depressed', they use purely cinematic shots and use text at the bottom of the screen to get multiple people's stories across to the viewer. 'All the kids are depressed' is also a fully abstract video as the shots used do not have any link to a narrative.
How your technical skills have developed
During this project, I have learnt how to colour correct videos in Premiere Pro. Although through in my project I wasn't strictly correcting the colour of my videos, rather I was exaggerating them to add depth to the scenario and character. However, this still taught me the skill of how to colour correct videos which will prove a useful skill for future projects. A skill that I hope to develop in the future is my researching skills. During this project, I struggled with the research aspect and how I was meant to find new ideas and concepts. I think this is partly due to the fact that my idea didn't change at all throughout the project which made it a lot harder to try and find material that can influence and change my idea.
How your product will be distributed and consumed
My product is uploaded to YouTube as that's where most music videos are posted to for views. In order to make money from my music video on YouTube, I would either need the video itself to get an absurd number of views which would amount to money or I would need to monetize the video e.g. place advertising on it and every time someone watched the adverts on the video I would make some money, although both options are highly unlikely to happen since my video would need to go viral to get a high amount of views; and in order to monetise my channel I would need to meet specific criteria on the YouTube website and I am not eligible for monetisation.

Although I am not able to make money from my project, other people who make music videos are still able to make money in different ways. For example, a music video director would make money from making a music video by being commissioned by an artist or studio to make the video.
Audience responses to your final product
Forms response chart. Question title: What did you think about the editing speed of the video?. Number of responses: 5 responses.
80% of the people who answered my questionnaire said that they liked the speed of the editing, I feel like this is the most common answer because for a majority of the video the editing speed matches and changes with the speed of the song. I can also see that 60% of people specifically liked how the clip speeds varied throughout the video and how the speed of certain clips change. This shows me that my target audience likes faster-paced videos.
Forms response chart. Question title: Would you share this video with people you know?. Number of responses: 5 responses.
Only 40% of people who answered my questionnaire said that they would share my music video with someone they know. The other 60% obviously replied saying they would not. There are only two conclusions I can draw from this data. The first is that they don't think they know anyone who would be interested in seeing this music video. The second reason may be because they didn't think the music video was good enough to show to someone else which is understandable considering that even though this music video was made for this target audience, I wasn't able to create something I knew would fully appeal to the audience as I was held back by the restrictions of themes and needing to create a project which I would be able to explain for marks and a good grade.

From this data, I can tell that 40% of my audience enjoyed the video to the point where they didn't think there was anything to change to really make it better, these two people are most likely the two people who said they would share the video with someone they know. The other 60% of people had different reasons for what they thought the video could improve. One person said that they would have made the clip length "a bit shorter". This is understandable considering that the song has very fast sections which would go well with shorter cut clips. However, I didn't do this because I wanted to exaggerate the disequilibrium that the character is experiencing within his mind.

Another person thought that the colours could have been "exaggerated" more. I feel like this comment is talking specifically about the science sections of the video. However, this would not make sense because the science section of the video is the calm before the storm, where the character is in a semi-rational state trying to calmly fix his problems. It makes a lot more sense that only the forest scenes are exaggerated in colour because that's when he's in a panicked state and doesn't really have any idea what's going on. At that moment he's also under the influence of the substances he made in the science lab, so essentially he's high in those sections of the music video. The other person to answer was less specific with their answer and said that I could "change the brightness of the colours". I'm guessing that they had the same meaning as the other person who answered, however, I cannot be 100% sure.

The final question I asked was whether the target audience understood the message in the video. Nobody really looked into it deeper other than it being about mental health. This could either be because the message wasn't clear enough, which makes sense considering I didn't do as much planning as I could have and that the video was slightly abstract. The other reason could purely be that the people who answered my questions didn't look deeply enough into the subject to fully understand my message.
Your ‘next steps’ as a media producer (what do you want to learn or improve on next year) Next year, I want to develop my photography skills further. I'm very interested in slow shutter speed photography. This project has taught me that I am more of an ideas person meaning that I come up with good ideas, but I'm not very good at the practical aspect of it all. Therefore, by doing a photography project, I will have to do minimal practical work.
